Whaling in the Movies

Presented by Senior Curator Fred Calabretta

Throughout the history of the motion picture industry Hollywood has often been drawn to whales and whaling as movie themes offering action, excitement, adventure, and occasionally even romance. This presentation explores this story, which features three actual whaleships – including the Charles W. Morgan. Special focus is also given to the classic whaling movie Down To the Sea in Ships.

Fred Calabretta is Senior Curator at Mystic Seaport Museum. Before joining the Museum’s staff, Fred experienced an inside look at the entertainment industry, working as a stage technician in Hollywood for several years. His presentation reveals some Hollywood “magic” and will be illustrated with rare movie memorabilia from Mystic Seaport Museum’s collections.
